Another year in the muddy trenches of Ranmore Common and another sterling showing from our front line Sunday morning Cyclocross team. This year’s challenge, made more treacherous through persistent rain leading up to the event and the organisers desire to make the course as long as possible through chicanes and other cunning diversions, was well attended and again impeccably organised by the Surrey County Radio Team.

The races were subdivided into age groups and heats were run throughout the morning. I think it is fair to say that the younger age groups drew the short straw as they not only had a larger pack to contend with but in most cases had to run the gauntlet 3 times with the subsequent loss of puff. We fielded 7 Scouts with varying levels of success but no lack of enthusiasm and team spirit with results as follows:

In February there was a quadruple celebration for four leaders. Ben Tingle and Mark Colacchio proudly wear their Wood Badge on completing their Leader training. The Wood badge is two beads on a leather thong, which is worn around the neck. Training involves many aspects of relationships, organisation, skills and administration and is equivalent to a full management training course. The beads represent the beads given to Baden Powell by local tribesmen in Africa during his time there.
Nick Clark received his ten year service award as a Leader and his father, Jim Clark, our Group Scout Leader, received his forty year service award. Congratulations to them all.

Fundraising - December 2009 |
|
December was a magnificent month for Group fundraising!
Firstly we started the month off well by raising over £200 by running a stall in the Priory when Santa landed in his helicopter. The majority of the funds raised were as a result of the hard work by Mollie over the year, collecting and cleaning hundreds of soft toys for the tombola. The Network Section also did brisk trade from their Tuck Shop!

Scouts - Advanced Skills Programme 2010 |
|
The aim of the Advanced Skills Programme (ASP) is to allow Scouts an opportunity to specialise in a chosen activity over a period of 5 weeks (2 evenings in spring term and 3 evenings in the summer term), allowing them to gain a more proficient standard. Wherever possible it will also enable them to obtain some of the more specialist activity badges in the Scout section. Letters and forms are available at Scouts / Documents / ASP Letters.

The weather was very good and it was even warm enough on the Saturday afternoon to play table tennis and do abseiling outside with no coats! Saturday night we had a camp fire and sparklers. But to find out more please read the reports of the camp by three of our Sixers.
